30 months and restitution

Barry R. Herr, former treasurer of the Lower Susquehanna Synod, has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison and two years of supervised release.

He was ordered to pay $799,998 in restitution. Herr, 62, was arrested in March and charged with misappropriating more than $1 million in synod funds (May 2008,"Former synod treasurer accused of funds misuse"; see also the synod Web site).

To date, he has returned about $300,000 to the synod. Herr told the court: “I’ve stolen money from the very people who trusted me. I have a hard time living with myself.”
