Barbara Ahnstedt Swartling began Dec. 10 as executive director of the ELCA Deaconess Community.
Swartling moved to Chicago from Bainbridge Island, Wash., when her husband, David, became ELCA secretary in 2007.
She has more than 35 years of commercial banking experience and previously served the ELCA Board of Pensions as a trustee.
Swartling will work closely with Sister Anne Keffer, directing deaconess.
