A nun who runs a church for 1,600 Roma people in Bardejov, Slovakia, said the European Union has done little to help to eastern Europe’s 8 million Roma.
Atanazia Holubovia, a nun with Slovakia’s Greek Catholic Church, said funds earmarked for Roma communities “were often diverted for other uses by local administrators.”
Roma people, once referred to as Gypsies, have high unemployment and infant mortality rates.
