The Way We Were: 1965

Leading Christmas carols on the Lackawanna commuter train

It wasn’t the Polar Express—but a 1965 commuter train from New York City to Hoboken, N.J. Lutheran pastor Malvin H. Lundeen (above) leads commuters in singing Christmas carols as their Erie-Lackawanna train pulls into the Hoboken terminal.

Lundeen, secretary of the former Lutheran Church in America, also conducted a brief prayer service.
