The Maryland Court of Special Appeals ruled Oct. 28 that a suburban megachurch that seceded from the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church must return property worth more than $30 million.
The denomination’s lawyer, Thomas L. McCally, said not all of the parishioners followed when John A. Cherry, the founder of From the Heart Church Ministries, Temple Hills, Md., decided to leave the denomination.
The court upheld rulings that the real estate still belongs to the denomination but personal property on the grounds belongs to the congregation.
