North Dakota was the only state first lady Laura Bush had not visited until she arrived at Sims Skandinanvian Lutheran Church, Almont, in October.
She was welcomed by a sign that said: “Your 50th state, the best for last.”
She visited an elementary school to promote an art program and the 124-year-old church, believed to be the oldest Lutheran church west of the Missouri River.
Save America’s Treasures program, chaired by the first lady, funded the church’s restoration project.
