ELCA chaplain at Camp David

Patrick McLaughlin, an ELCA chaplain stationed in Newport News, Va., is the author of No Atheists in Foxholes: Prayers and Reflections From the Front.

In an interview with Religion News Service, McLaughlin spoke of his assignment as chaplain at the Camp David presidential retreat from 2002 to 2005.

He described President George W. Bush as “a very spiritual person.”

Although the first family attended worship at Camp David, he said he was chaplain “mostly to the crew who is there all the time.”

McLaughlin said working “with all the Marines, soldiers, sailors, airmen” in Iraq is “the most important thing” he’ll do in his entire Navy career.
