George A. Patrick, treasurer of the New England Synod until his resignation last December, was arrested in September, arraigned and charged with embezzlement of $800,000 of synod funds.
Robert Isaksen, synod bishop, said, "I am personally grieving both my misplaced trust and my inability to suspect that something was amiss." He is confident that recent changes in the synod's money management methods make it less vulnerable to future misappropriation.
Recovery of the missing funds is being pursued with bonding companies, Isaksen said.
