Christmas at sea

Lutherans gather gifts for port chaplains to deliver to ships before they set sail on voyages that will find the seafarers spending Christmas in the middle of an ocean.

The very gifts we buy for Christmas separate seafarers from their families (the bulk of toys, clothing and other items are imported and arrive by merchant ship).

Seafarers & International House, New York, adds international long distance telephone cards, prayers and Scripture to more practical gifts such as hooded sweatshirts (size L-XL), stocking or watch caps, gloves, scarves, T-shirts (size M-L), gym socks, chocolates, canned nuts and hard candy.

Deadline for unwrapped gifts is Dec. 5, wrapped gifts Dec. 19.
