In Bern, Switzerland, 85 theologians warned against using the Bible to justify oppression in the Middle East.
Meeting Sept. 10-14 as part of the World Council of Churches’ Palestine Israel Ecumenical Forum initiative, the theologians included Christian Palestinians, as well as North Americans and Europeans involved in Jewish-Christian dialogue.
“The contemporary conflict in Palestine-Israel resounds with biblical metaphors,” participants said in a statement. “However, there was significant consensus in the conference that the Bible must not be utilized to justify oppression or supply simplistic commentary on contemporary events.”
