John Gay, the Church of England’s religious education spokesman, said the number of English teenagers who choose to follow religious studies for their “A-level” final examinations rose by nearly 6 percent in 2008, to more than 20,100, the fifth consecutive year of increase.
“Although this interest is not necessarily reflected in church attendance, it is very encouraging,” he said.
