Red Cross access to detainees

ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson joined other religious leaders in asking Congress to give the International Committee of the Red Cross access to all U.S.-held detainees—including those held at secret overseas prisons.

The leaders’ Sept. 24 letter asks Congress to support legislation that would give the Red Cross the right to use information from the CIA to access the detainees.

While the U.S. has supported such access and opposed holding detainees incommunicado, the letter claims the country has engaged in secret detentions over the past seven years.

The writers said such access will help restore U.S. integrity on the issue of torture.
