Vietnam: religious persecution

The government of Vietnam ordered the harassment, detention and imprisonment of individuals and leaders of diverse religious communities, says a new report by the U. S. Commission on International Religious Freedom.

The government-backed independent commission called on the U.S. State Department to renew its designation of Vietnam as a “country of particular concern,” under the terms of the 1998 International Religious Freedom Act.

That designation is reserved, under law, for nations that engage in severe violations of religious freedom.
