In August and September, during the 2008 Olympics and the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, China, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover (Germany) gave away more than 230,000 black bracelets to protest the Chinese government’s human rights record.
Church leaders began the bracelet campaign as a way to protest without boycotting the games. In return, bracelet recipients donated about $74,000 to benefit the Asian Human Rights Commission in Hong Kong.
