Georgia’s Patriarch Ilia II asked Russia’s leadership to “end the confrontation between two Orthodox countries” and not recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, two pro-Russian breakaway enclaves in Georgia.
The Georgian patriarch said Russia was placing itself at risk by recognizing the enclaves’ independence.
