HIV travel restrictions

Azur Riki, a Lutheran from Nigeria, made a 12-hour journey to Lagos and a three-hour trip to Abuja multiple times to request a U.S. visa for this summer’s Women of the ELCA Triennial Gathering and ELCA Global Mission Event.

While she was eventually approved, some others were not.

Riki is an HIV-positive widow with two children, aged 5 and 11.

She supports her family through programs of the Mashiah Foundation, Jos, Nigeria, which is funded by ELCA congregations, ELCA Global Mission and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.
