Nobel-winning author Alexander Solzhenitsyn, 89, who survived Soviet dictator Josef Stalin’s gulag labor camps, died Aug. 3.
A report from Russian Orthodox church leaders posted on Russian-language Web site Patriarchia said Solzhenitsyn, author of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (available from Amazon), was “one of the spiritual leaders of patriotic Orthodox organizations.”
