Car mission's success grows

Good News Garage, which provides the needy with vehicles for little to no cost, has grown since it was featured in The Lutheran (April 1998, "Drive to succeed").

The Lutheran Social Services subsidiary, which has distributed more than 3,500 cars, now has offices in Connecticut and New Hampshire in addition to its Burlington, Vt., garage.

Partnering with local garages, Good News Garage can “take nearly any car in New England,” said Connecticut program manager Carolyn Venne.

Donors can deduct the fair market value instead of the amount for which the car was sold to a client—a significant tax advantage.

The organization also addresses transportation equity through programs like sending mothers to driving school.
