Steven L. Ullestad, bishop of the Northeastern Iowa Synod, and Ralston H. Deffenbaugh Jr., president of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, asked Congress on May 20 to “exercise rigorous oversight” of federal immigration raids like the one at a meat processing plant in Postville, Iowa, May 12.
ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson said that because of the raid—where a reported 386 workers from Guatemala, Mexico, Israel and the Ukraine were arrested—“families have been separated, children are traumatized and a once-thriving community is devastated.”
ELCA Domestic Disaster Response and local Lutherans are responding.
