Beardstown Ladies: "Do your homework"

Investment clubs make learning easier and spread the risk

If you're thinking of either forming an investment club or making a foray into the stock market on your own, the Beardstown Ladies will give you lots of good tips. But they'll say the most important is, "Do your homework. Don't rely on advice from investment gurus."

The 15 women who now comprise the Beardstown [Ill.] Ladies' Investment Club — of book, video and television fame — boast an average return of 23.4 percent on their investments, out-performing mutual funds and professionals. The women formed their club in 1983 by each investing $100. Now each contributes $25 a month. They meet the first Thursday of every month, usually in the basement of First Lutheran Church in Beardstown.
