Say your congregation wants to raise money for a well in West Africa. ELCA Global Mission estimated the cost at $10,000—when the dollar was strong. Today $14,000 is the likely cost of installing the well.

In early 2008 the value of the U.S. dollar dropped to an all-time low against the European Union’s euro. The weakened dollar has had far-reaching effects—including a profound impact on international mission agencies.
Lutheran World Relief President John Arthur Nunes said the agency and its partners in Africa, Asia and Latin America have also been hit hard.
