Stories of Awe and Abundance (Continuum) by Sister Jose Hobday is a creative and inspiring collection of stories about everyday spirituality. She shares her practices of praying in cemeteries, cradling herself in a hugging prayer, jumping up and down in a pogo prayer and using a photo album as a devotional resource. These stories are rich treasures of the heart and spirit from a teacher who cherishes life, love and all the good graces that surround us.

Soul of a Citizen: Living with Conviction in a Cynical Time (St. Martin's Griffin) by Paul Rogat Loeb presents accounts of ordinary people who through practice and perseverance have transformed themselves and the communities where they live. Loeb writes cogently about the ways in which citizens have gotten involved, found their voices and taken stands. He reveals that the spiritual resources of patience and hope are essential ingredients of soulful citizenship.

Autumn Tale (October Films, PG) is the last installment in a four-part cycle named after the seasons by veteran French writer and director Eric Rohmer. The drama revolves around the attempts of a happily married woman to find her widowed friend a suitable man. This lovely and literate French film celebrates the extravagant affections of love and friendship.

The Dinner Game (Lions Gate Films, not rated) is a hilarious French comedy by Francis Verber, the creator of La Cage aux Folles. In this farcical drama, a snooty and successful French publisher selects a lowly accountant to be the source of a prank at a party. This accident-prone fellow turns the tables on the elitist who turns out to have plenty of problems himself.

Life Is Beautiful (Miramax, PG-13--Holocaust-related thematic elements) is the winner of three Academy Awards. This Italian drama features Roberto Benigni (Best Actor) as a Jewish father who creates an elaborate game to keep his young son's mind off the harsh reality of suffering and death going on around them in a concentration camp. Life Is Beautiful reveals how laughter can set the spirit free even in the most dire circumstances.

The Mighty (Miramax, PG--elements of violence and peril) revolves around the friendship between Max, a 13-year-old giant with size 14 shoes, and Kevin, a physically deformed youth with a high IQ. The latter's dreams of adventure spring to life when he climbs aboard Max's shoulders and the two become one. This inspiring film hurrahs imagination as the firepower that enables these two outsiders to transcend their disabilities, loneliness and familial problems. The myth of the Knight of the Roundtable inspires them to become all they were meant to be.
