High-tech-friendly church equips an African seminary

Before retiring, Dale Dann, 60, worked on experiments launched into space. So upgrading and shipping computers to Lubango, Angola, was no big challenge for the former Boeing electronics designer.

With help from members of his church, Grace Lutheran, Des Moines, Wash., Dann acquired used and obsolete computer parts and then repaired, assembled and upgraded them with cutting-edge software and circuitry.

Last year Grace shipped 25 computers, seven printers and three battery backup systems to the Association of Evangelicals of Angola Seminary for use in computer classes. Dann led a team to set up the machines.
