Greg Mortenson is one of six Americans honored by the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy with the Des Moines, Iowa, organization’s first awards for “inspiring others through their exemplary work as citizen diplomats and for promoting cultural understanding around the world.”
The awards were presented in February at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
Mortenson, a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, Bozeman, Mont., was recognized for his work building 64 schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan through the Central Asia Institute, which he founded (June, 2007).
His book about his experiences, Three Cups of Tea, has sold more than 1 million copies and has been on The New York Times best-seller list, nonfiction paperback, for more than one year and was second on the list in February. It also ranked 35 on the USA Today “Top 100 Books of 2007” list.
