A model effort

Oregon youth create a 'dream' church building

Youth at United Lutheran Church in Eugene, Ore., are model Sunday school students. Model-making that is.

As an intern at United Lutheran Church, Eugene, Ore., seminarian Katya Ouchakof helped teach the fourth- and fifth-grade Sunday school class. On the first day of class, Ouchakof said she and her co-teacher, Jon Brandt, realized this “group of five very energetic and sports-focused” youth really had no hope of following the provided curriculum.

So the teachers asked the kids—Rachel Bakke, Rachel Hample, Peter Helikson, Daniel Krueger and Michael Russo—what they wanted to do in Sunday school for the year.

One of the ideas: build a model of a church.
