"Let the good times roll” defines New Orleans, especially at Mardi Gras time. Last February’s celebration signaled steps back to normalcy after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. But many more—and different—steps are needed for life to be restored, remind leaders of the Bayou Conference of the ELCA Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod .
They offer a different parade as Lent begins—a prayer pilgrimage, “Come and See,” that guides people through seven areas affected by the floodwaters. The route goes through neighborhoods and churches that were damaged and are being repaired.
“It’s a journey of great sorrow and loss ... of incredible generosity and hopefulness,” according to the guide, which includes maps and descriptions of each site and ongoing work.
