The Magazine of The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Numbers up, down

Schools solid, worship attendance a challenge

Welcome to the largest issue of the year for The Lutheran. Each November we feature the colleges, universities, seminaries and campus ministries of the ELCA and their activities.

To help familiarize you with them, we offer 28 pages of editorial and advertising content, plus Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson’s reflections on the value of these 36 schools ("Colleges lead way"). Both the number of pages and volume of advertising are records for the magazine.

Other figures are worth noting. A report on megachurches ("Megachurch myths") dispels the myth that these congregations are long on show, short on substance. Mark Grorud of ELCA Evangelical Outreach and Congregational Mission points out that the megachurches (generally those with worship attendance of more than 2,000 weekly) of the ELCA have “strength and depth” in education, worship, evangelism and outreach.
