Abdissa's 'Circle of Friends'

An Ethiopian refugee, Abdissa Aman, took this photo of his friends on the playground at the Jane Addams School, Sioux Falls, S.D. The fourth-grader won first place—including a trip to Washington, D.C.—in the elementary school division of the World Refugee Day photo contest, “A New Home, a New Life,” sponsored by the U.N. “Love photo because of composition, expression and inclusive feeling,” said one judge. Abdissa and his family are among many refugees resettled through the Refugee & Immigration Center of Lutheran Social Services of South Dakota. The photo is on display this month at the Closer Connections Conference in Sioux Falls.
