Biking more than 700 miles from St. Charles, Mo., to Minneapolis in late July, ELCA Board of Pensions trustee T. Van Matthews raised $35,000 for the church’s Special Needs Retirement Fund for low-income retirees.

“My wife, Melinda, and I met many wonderful people along the way—pastors, members of congregations and others who joined us [for] part of the ride,” said Matthews, a member of Trinity Lutheran, Greenville, S.C.
The fund provides extra income to retired
ELCA pastors, rostered lay people, lay employees and surviving spouses with the greatest financial need.
