Mark Levsen, director of music and organist at St. John Lutheran Church, Webster, S.D., recently came to the aid of a fellow member. Levsen, 46, donated a kidney to Roger Grimsrud, 75, who had sung in the church choir until diabetes and kidney disease made participation impossible.
After their pastor, Will Olsen, was told in April that Grimsrud would need a transplant or have to go on dialysis, he alerted the congregation. Of several parishioners who began preliminary tests, Levsen was immediately found to be a good match. Levsen said: “The Bible says that if a man has two coats, he should give one away. I have two kidneys. I want to give one to you.” He was back on his organ bench the first Sunday in August.
