Canadians elect first female national bishop

Meeting June 21-24 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada’s Eleventh Biennial National Convention elected Susan Johnson as its first female national bishop. Johnson is an assistant to the bishop in the Eastern Synod and served as ELCIC vice president from 2001 to 2005.

“I promise to be all that I can to help us together to be in mission for others,” said Johnson, who succeeds Raymond Schultz upon his retirement Sept. 1.

Johnson has been an adviser to the Lutheran World Federation Council since 1998. She served as a member of the LWF North American Regional Committee and of the LWF Leadership Development Task Force.
