Bishop elections

David Zellmer
Elected: David Zellmer, 53, as bishop of the South Dakota Synod, effective Sept. 1.

When: June 1, on the second ballot, with 444 votes. Lawrence R. Wohlrabe, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Moorhead, Minn., received 178 votes.

Bio: Pastor of Lutheran Memorial (Pierre) and Grace (Hayes) Lutheran churches in South Dakota. Served calls in Aberdeen, Mellette and Mitchell, all in South Dakota. Graduate of Luther Theological Seminary (now Luther Seminary), St. Paul, Minn.

Replaces: Andrea DeGroot-Nesdahl.


Michael Rinehart

Elected:
Michael Rinehart, 45, as bishop of the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod, effective Sept. 1.

When: June 2, on the fifth ballot with 219 votes. Michael R. Button, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, Brenham, Texas, received 117 votes.

Bio: Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Conroe, Texas. Also served congregations in Davenport, Iowa, and Charlotte, N.C. Graduate of Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio.

Replaces: Paul J. Blom.


Jessica R. Crist

Elected:
Jessica R. Crist, 54, as bishop of the Montana Synod, effective Sept. 1.

When: June 2, on the third ballot, with 252 votes. Douglas Vold, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, Helena, Mont., received 48 votes.

Bio: Associate to the synod’s bishop and director of the Northern Rockies Institute of Theology, Great Falls, Mont. Also served congregations in Cambridge, Mass., and Great Falls. Graduate of Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, Mass.

Replaces: Richard R. Omland.



Richard H. Graham

Elected:
Richard H. Graham, 56, as bishop of the Metropolitan Washington, D.C., Synod, effective Sept. 1.

When: June 8, on the fifth ballot with 188 votes. Philip Christian Hirsch, pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fairfax, Va., received 139 votes.

Bio: Pastor of Hope Lutheran Church and Student Center, College Park, Md. Served calls in Hagers-town and Annapolis, both in Maryland. Graduate of Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, Mass.

Replaces: Theodore F. Schneider.


Wayne N. Miller

Elected:
Wayne N. Miller, 57, as bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod, effective Sept. 1.

When:
June 9, on the fifth ballot, with 343 votes. Lawrence J. Clark, executive director, Lutheran Theological Center in Atlanta, received 222 votes.

Bio: Pastor of St. Mark Lutheran Church, Aurora, Ill. Served calls in Chicago and Naperville, Ill.,and at the Augustana Center for Developmentally Disabled Children, Chicago. Graduate of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.

Replaces: Paul R. Landahl.



B. Penrose Hoover

B. Penrose Hoover, 60, as bishop of the Lower Susquehanna Synod, effective Sept. 1.

When: June 9, on the fifth ballot, with 321 votes. Carol S. Hendrix, synod bishop, received 276 votes.

Bio: Pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Camp Hill, Pa. Also served Pennsylvania congregations in East Early, Lancaster and Lebanon. Graduate of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.

Replaces:
Carol S. Hendrix.



Lawrence R. Wohlrabe

Lawrence R. Wohlrabe, 52, as bishop of the Northwestern Minnesota Synod, effective Sept. 1.

When: June 10, on the fifth ballot with 350 votes. Richard J. Foss, bishop of the Eastern North Dakota Synod, received 209 votes.

Bio: Pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Moorhead, Minn. Served Minnesota congregations in Willmar and St. James. Also served as admissions director of Luther Northwestern Seminary (now Luther Seminary), St. Paul, Minn., and as a bishop’s assistant in the Southwestern Minnesota Synod. Graduate of Luther Seminary.

Replaces: Rolf P. Wangberg.



Kurt F. Kusserow

Elected:
Kurt F. Kusserow, 43, as bishop of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod, effective Sept. 1.

When: June 15, on the fifth ballot, with 270 votes. Martha Clementson, assistant to the synod’s bishop, received 248 votes.

Bio: Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church Latrobe, Pa. Served as a pastor for the Westmoreland Unit of Town and Country Lutheran Ministry, serving congregations in Apollo and Avonmore, Pa. Graduate of Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio.

Replaces:
Donald J. McCoid.



Robert L. Driesen

Elected:
Robert L. Driesen, 59, as bishop of the Upper Susquehanna Synod, effective Sept. 1.

When: June 16, on the fifth ballot with 172 votes. Daniel May, assistant to the synod’s bishop, received 170 votes.

Bio: Pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church, South Williamsport, Pa. Also served Sidman-Elton Lutheran parish, near Johnstown, Pa. Graduate of the Lutheran Seminary at Gettysburg (Pa.).

Replaces:
A. Donald Main.




Felipe Lozada-Montañez
Elected: Felipe Lozada-Montañez, 57, as bishop of the Caribbean Synod, effective Sept. 1.

When: June 22, on the third ballot with 71 votes. Marysol Diaz-Feliciano, pastor of Iglesia Evangelica Luterana San Marcos, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, received 28 votes.

Bio: Pastor of Iglesia Luterana San Juan, Dorado, Puerto Rico. Served Iglesia Luterana Reconciliación, Levittown, Toa Baja. Graduate of Puerto Rico Evangelical Seminary, San Juan.

Replaces: interim Francisco Sosa.

• Wm. Chris Boerger, 58, as bishop of the Northwest Washington Synod, June 1, on the first ballot, with 358 of 384 votes.

• Dean W. Nelson, 63, as bishop of the Southwest California Synod, June 1, on the second ballot with 231 of 303 votes.

• Gerald Mansholt, 58, as bishop of the Central States Synod, June 2, on the fifth ballot with 272 of 451 votes.

• E. Roy Riley, 59, as bishop of the New Jersey Synod, June 2, on the first ballot, with 322 of 414 votes.

• Ralph Jones, 52, as bishop of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod, June 7 on the first ballot with 152 of 179 votes.

• Harold Usgaard, 59, as bishop of the Southeastern Minnesota Synod, June 8 on the first ballot, with 374 of 473 votes.
