Even babies were brought forward to sign the charter with thumbprints when Imanuel Indonesian Lutheran, Newington, N.H., became a congregation. Signing the charter are Djoni Sembel, his son, Daniel, and wife, Debby.
The New England Synod recognized the congregation at a May 20 service followed by Indonesian food, music and dance. Robert Waworuntu serves the congregation, making it the first ELCA Indonesian church to be served by a pastor from Indonesia. (Four other Indonesian faith communities are in various stages of development.) Imanuel was received as the synod’s first new start in five years at the June 8 assembly.
