Bishop elections

Bruce Burnside
Elected: Bruce Burnside, 53, as bishop of the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin, effective July 1.

When: May 5, on the fifth ballot with 253 votes. Michael C. Rehak, an assistant to the bishop, received 159 votes.

Bio: Pastor of St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Monona, Wis. Graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Wash., and Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio. Served congregations in Sharon and Boscobel, both Wisconsin.

Replaces: George G. Carlson.


Duane Pederson
Elected:
Duane C. Pederson, 52, as bishop of the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin, effective Aug. 1.

When: June 2, on the fifth ballot with 329 votes. Gary A. Hedding, an assistant to the bishop, received 136 votes.

Bio: Pastor of First Lutheran Church, Eau Claire, Wis. Graduate of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., and Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn. Served congregations in Chicago and Bozeman, Mont.

Replaces: Robert D. Berg.


John Schleicher
Elected:
John Schleicher, 63, as bishop of the North/West Lower Michigan Synod, effective Sept. 1.

When: May 22, on the fifth ballot with 193 votes. Daniel B. Ward, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., received 192 votes.

Bio: Assistant to the bishop, North/West Lower Michigan Synod. Graduate of Capital University, Columbus, Ohio; Evangelical (now Trinity) Lutheran Seminary, Columbus; and United Seminary, Dayton, Ohio. Served congregations in Kilgore, Ohio; Detroit; Imlay City, Mich.; and Farwell, Mich.

Replaces: Gary Hansen.


Elected: Dave H. Brauer-Rieke, 51, as bishop of the Oregon Synod, effective Aug. 1.

When: May 19, on the fifth ballot with 230 votes. Zane O. Wilson, an assistant to the bishop, had 132 votes.

Bio: Pastor of Atonement Lutheran Church, Newport, Ore. Graduate of Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, Wash., and Luther Northwestern Seminary, St. Paul, Minn. Served a congregation in Milton-Freewater, Ore.

Replaces: Paul R. Swanson.


Elected: H. Julian Gordy, 56, as bishop of the Southeastern Synod, effective Sept. 1.

When: June 3, on the fifth ballot with 286 votes. David Keener, pastor of Christ the King Lutheran Church, Evans, Ga., received 173 votes.

Bio: Pastor of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Franklin, Tenn. Graduate of Lutheran Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C. Served congregations in Morristown, Tenn., and Ocean Springs, Miss.

Replaces: Ronald B. Warren.


Re-elected:

• Edward Benoway, 59, as bishop of the Florida-Bahamas Synod, May 5, on the sixth ballot, with 252 of 502 votes.

• Robert D. Hofstad, 59, as bishop of the Southwestern Washington Synod, May 19 on the third ballot, with 207 of 281 votes.

• Craig E. Johnson, 59, as bishop of Minneapolis Area Synod, June 1, on the first ballot, with 449 of 562 votes.
