Student musicians get reality check

A new internship program at Carthage College, Kenosha, Wis., provides a reality check for future church musicians.

The college has offered a church music and worship emphasis in the music department for years. But other than a practicum during their senior year, students didn’t have regular opportunities on campus or in the community for practical experiences under a mentor’s supervision.

A three-year $250,000 grant from the Siebert Lutheran Foundation, Brookfield, Wis., changed that. The grant partially funds one-year internships at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Racine, Wis., for three Carthage church music students, allowing them to gain practical skills and experience while receiving a stipend.
