On April 22, Farmington [Minn.] Lutheran Church dedicated this four-by-15-foot carving made by member David Rausch. The artwork was inspired by the story of Jesus appearing with two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35), said Rausch, adding that Emmaus Grove is the name of this church’s subdivision.
The center section shows Jesus (in butternut) walking to church with two modern-day disciples. The other two panels depict baptism and communion (butternut). The remaining wood is basswood. It took the retired agricultural engineer a year to complete this work.
Rausch, who was featured in Carving magazine, has evolved from hobbyist to master woodcarver, said a friend, Phil Eaves.
