Evangelism tips

A local newspaper carried an article by one who wrote why she no longer goes to church, so retired ELCA pastor F. Dean Lueking of River Forest, Ill., responded. What followed was a six-month and counting series of published exchanges in which the two strive to keep civil, open and relevant to matters of faith and unbelief. “It gives me a voice into a community of thousands of people, a unique medium through which to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, not in abstract cliches but in direct response to probing questions on the minds of many in our times,” Lueking said. “The newspaper apparently regards this as news because the ongoing exchange has no prospect of concluding. Evangelism, let it be noted, can occur by answering rather than neglecting newspaper articles that invite faithful, thoughtful response.” Contact Lueking.
