I cross your brow
With ashes,
With palm flares’ fallout
That lit another midnight’s
Baptism into Easter life.
And now we kneel
Without the King’s parade,
As if to peer into our
Empty tomb and hope for
Time’s procrastination.
I trace a track across
The furrows of your age—
Ashes melting makeup
And staining skin.
Let my fingers dig deeper
Into the chalice of repentance
And mark this old-young-woman-man
With truth.
From dust to dust
The ashen finger
Inscribes our life
With Christ’s burden.
