Ash Wednesday

I cross your brow
With ashes,
With palm flares’ fallout
That lit another midnight’s
Baptism into Easter life.
And now we kneel
Without the King’s parade,
As if to peer into our
Empty tomb and hope for
Time’s procrastination.
I trace a track across
The furrows of your age—
Ashes melting makeup
And staining skin.

Let my fingers dig deeper
Into the chalice of repentance
And mark this old-young-woman-man
With truth.
From dust to dust
The ashen finger
Inscribes our life
With Christ’s burden.

Discuss the February issue:

Your fellow readers have already told us what they think about the February issue of The Lutheran. Three readers have already posted comments about "More than a martyr" by Larry Rasmussen and "Abide with me" by William R. Matthews.

Why don't you add your thoughts? Let us (and your fellow readers) know what you liked — or didn't like — about the most recent issue.

Share your evangelism tips:

Reader George C. Weirick challenged the staff of The Lutheran: "Tell us about programs that work, or unusual or new evangelism methods."

Send us your tips via email, with a brief description (two or three paragraphs), along with contact information for those wanting more background.

The staff reviews submissions and publishes the best as a regular item on the “Currents” pages.
