Like bees to honey, Elroy Dietrich, a retired ELCA pastor, recommends “swarming evangelism.” While serving at Trinity Lutheran Church, Ocqueoc, Mich., from 1985 to 1994, members attending worship would intentionally surround visitors and guests after the service. “And it worked,” he said. “The swarmed visitors returned and became members. In time they, too, participated in the swarming.” Contact Dietrich by email.
John Bowen, author of Evangelism for ‘Normal’ People (Augsburg Fortress, 2002), notes that some shy away from it as from a skunk that wanders into a dinner party. Dwight DuBois of the Center for Renewal at Grand View College, Des Moines, Iowa, and the Southeastern Iowa Synod put together a compilation of such writings on evangelism that are accessible at www.seiasynod.org.
