When 'we've done all we can,' we still face human failures

In the award-winning television series ER, life and death hang in the balance every week. Repeated in each episode are similar efforts to save a life: cardiac paddles on the chest; repeated doses of eppy, whatever that is; and then a revived life — or, sometimes, a death. Modern lifesaving technology gives those doctors and nurses the power of the gods, the power to save people.
