Church Council member dies

Earl L. Mummert, 61, an ELCA Church Council member, died Oct. 20 in Hershey, Pa.

ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson wrote in an Oct. 23 e-mail to churchwide staff that Mummert died after a long struggle with depression. Mummert, a member of Tree of Life Lutheran Church, Harrisburg, Pa., was elected in 2001 to a six-year term on the council.

“This church has lost a passionate leader and a good friend,” Hanson told the ELCA News Service. Mummert “lived” the gospel, he added, saying his servanthood was seen on the Church Council, the board of trustees of the ELCA Board of Pensions, the ELCA Blue Ribbon Committee on Mission Funding and the Lutheran World Relief Strategic Thinkers Council.

Mummert was a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He is survived by his wife, Christine, two children and one grandchild.
