The ELCA Task Force on Human Sexuality met Sept. 15-17 in Chicago to finalize the text of “Free in Christ to Serve the Neighbor: Lutherans Talk about Human Sexuality,” a study guide that will be available Dec. 4.
“We’re signing off on a study, not a social statement,” said Peter Strommen, task force chair and bishop of the Northeastern Minnesota Synod. “Our objective is to finalize text that gives the ELCA a discussion tool to engage in before the social statement on human sexuality is written,” he said.
The third in a “Journey Together Faithfully” series of studies developed by the task force, the guide will engage congregations and members in discussion and theological discernment toward a possible ELCA social statement on human sexuality in 2009.
Conversations and responses from all three studies will be considered as the task force develops a first draft of a proposed social statement on human sexuality.
