Holding faith

N.D. parishioners make chests and quilts as baptismal gifts

During the cold winter months in Bismarck, N.D., volunteers at First Lutheran Church are keeping the fires of faith burning.

Yes, it’s quilting and building season. And because of their work, babies baptized at First not only return home with a baptismal certificate, candle and cloth, but a quilt and a place to store those items: their own, oak faith chest.

Parish nurse Ellen Forderer brought the idea home from a workshop she attended.

For nearly three years some 25 members have created 42 chests and just as many quilts for the newly baptized.
