With incense and prayer, David Kalke dedicated a wall mural in memory of Traveil Williams at the Central City Lutheran Mission in San Bernardino, Calif. An ELCA pastor, Kalke is executive director of the social ministry organization that focuses on health, education and housing needs of residents. Williams, 16, participated in mission activities and was known throughout the neighborhood for his dancing. He was gunned down near his house in June after a dance contest. Two mission members, Enrique Cortes and Nate Maldonado, painted the 8-foot-high portrait of the teen whose death was the city’s 32nd homicide this year.
