Issuing books with accompanying CDs is a welcome trend. A wonderful example is My Soul Is a Witness: The Message of the Spirituals in Word and Song, just released from Augsburg Books.
Author and soprano soloist is Marsha Hansen, whose music ministry often
takes her to churches and concert halls. Hansen explains the tradition
of African American spirituals, which readers can listen to her sing on
the CD.
The
explanations of individual songs, as well as the history of the form,
are innovative and thought-provoking. Hansen’s writing is distinguished
by its simplicity and clarity. Her description of her faith journey is
compelling. This creates an informality that seems to invite the reader
into Hansen’s living room.
