Preparing for pandemic

As news reports trace the spread of bird flu, often with maps, alarm spikes.

“Pandemic conditions could result in public health officials discouraging public gatherings, which could include worship,” said Kevin A. Massey, assistant director for ELCA Domestic Disaster Response.

To be prepared, Lutheran Disaster Response and staffs in information technology and worship developed a contingency plan for worship and spiritual care if congregations decide not to gather publicly. It also provides a congregational checklist on pandemic planning. These resources will be available on the ELCA Web site.

The materials also offer ideas for developing communication alternatives in the event of a pandemic. “Creative channels of communication can assist us in carrying on our important mission of providing spiritual care,” Massey said.
