ELCA members who responded to the tsunami in Southeast Asia and other disasters in 2005 contributed in an “unprecedented” way by giving more than $55 million, said ELCA Treasurer Christina Jackson-Skelton. The giving shattered the myth of donor fatigue and of donors simply moving their giving from one pot to another, said Kathy Sime, director of the ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal. “It doesn’t appear that giving to the World Hunger Appeal suffered because of giving to disasters,” she said. The ELCA received more than $17 million for the hunger appeal—its 2005 goal was $16.5 million.
