Church continues to struggle with gay issues

Three California churches ordain gay man

Craig Minich, 28, was ordained Feb. 18 as a youth minister by St. Paul and United Lutheran churches in Oakland, Calif., and University Lutheran Chapel, Berkeley, Calif.

Prior to his ordination, Minich, a graduate of Pacific Lutheran Seminary, Berkeley, served as a lay youth leader for the congregations.

As a noncelibate gay, Minich can't be ordained in the ELCA, which requires celibacy of unmarried pastors.
