Bishops approve CCM exception policy

The ELCA Conference of Bishops unanimously approved a proposed bylaw change in the church's constitution that would permit synod bishops to authorize another ELCA pastor to preside at an ordination.

Called to Common Mission, the ELCA's full communion accord with the Episcopal Church, called for all pastors to be ordained by a synod bishop. Theological objections to this spurred the ELCA Church Council to seek a bylaw change to allow a synod bishop "in unusual circumstances and with appropriate consultation" to authorize another ELCA pastor to preside at an ordination.
