Ecumenism: Disaster relief

Ecumenical efforts extend to disaster response. Lutheran/Episcopal Disaster Response in Mississippi provided support, supplies and food for tens of thousands of people who escaped hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

They operated from four sites in Mississippi: Christus Victor Lutheran, Ocean Springs; Bethel Lutheran, Biloxi; and Grace Lutheran and Coast Episcopal School in Long Beach.

Volunteers distributed supplies, food and medical care to thousands at “Camp Coast Care,” housed in the gym and on the grounds of Coast Episcopal.

The crisis has lasted into the winter, with people “living in a survival mode from day to day,” says Joe Robinson, site director for Camp Coast Care at Coast Episcopal.

But Lutherans and Episcopalians are there for the long haul, continuing joint relief efforts and long-term rebuilding.
